On a journey through Patagonia I look for traces of the repressed identity of my Mapuche grandmother, meeting kimches (old wise women) who know how to pass ancestral knowledge on through the newen (living energy), transforming words into seeds for new generations. As I listen to them, I recover part of an identity that was also denied me. Fill wenu mapu trenko llawi: the universe flows in a circle.

Inacayal

During a period known as the Conquest of the Desert, a group of Patagonian caciques led a major campaign to resist the advance of the huinca (white man). Among their number was Cacique Inacayal, who switched from being a “brave and loyal Indian” to a rebel leader.

Island Haiku

We arrive at Darwin Cemetery. Tetsuo Maeda, one of my travelling companions, sitting next to a white, wooden fence, picks up a notebook and writes a draft for a Haiku.
